Today I had to visit the British museum to find inspiration for my uni project 'Tribe.' We have to look into tribes and I decided to look here at the 'Africa' display, where they hold over 200,000 objects. I was very interested in the tribal masks. For my uni project we have to make a piece of jewellery inspired by a tribe :)
Heres what inspired me...
'Creatures of the bush'
This mask represents a well-known chief of the Chewa people, Malawi, late 20th century.
'This mask is related to the ancestral dead...'
The elaborate hairstyle was typical of the women of that era. Nigeria, 19th century.
Made from vegetable fibres, hair and red abrus seeds. From the Angus tribe of Nigeria, 20th century.
'Miniature mask'
Used for personal protection when out and about. Made from wood, skin, fibre, glass, and metal. From the Dan people off the Ivory Coast, 19th century.
'Objects of power'
Statue made with nails. Heirlooms- can be used to catch thieves or witches.
Doll made from wood, beads and fabric.
